Thank you for visiting My Botanical Baby! My name’s Krystal, and I’m the mom, wife, writer, holistic nutritionist, and yoga instructor behind this blog. I’m passionate about feeding myself and my family an organic, whole food, plant-based diet AND helping others do the same.
I ate pretty terribly growing up. My mom was a young, hard-working single mother, busy managing her daughter’s demanding schedule. I was a dancer, so the 5+ hours a day I spent dancing were enough to offset the calories I consumed, but the quality of food I ate did a number on my digestive system. I spent much of my childhood in the bathroom and in and out of doctors’ offices with various diagnoses. It wasn’t until I was on my own in college that I took control of my health and began my nutritional transformation. I experimented with food and various diets to find out what made me feel my best. It was (and still is) a plant-based diet. (For me this means mostly plants, zero meat, and virtually no dairy.)
Upon graduating from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, living the quintessential “starving artist” lifestyle, and being way over waiting tables and bartending to pay rent, I sought out a healthier workplace. Inspired by my love of dance and fascination with the body and how it moves, I became a Certified Personal Trainer and started working in a gym. I immediately saw the positive impact I could make in people’s lives and became enveloped in the health and fitness scene. I started my own business, worked with a vast array of diverse clients, led super high-energy bootcamps, taught corporate fitness classes, composed workouts, modeled and authored articles for fitness magazines, and racked up an abundance of continuing education credits and advanced certifications. (Can you say “knowledge junkie?” 😉)
Over the years, my passion shifted from fitness to nutrition. The field of Nutrition Science is constantly evolving, with new discoveries occurring daily. It’s an area of study that’s unfolding right now, and the information we’re learning has the capacity to drastically change our and our children’s lives. I find it infinitely fascinating. I pursued further education in the field, first becoming a Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant, and then earning the title of Certified Holistic Nutritionist (American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board).
My interest in plant-based nutrition narrowed specifically to the population of mothers and their children when I became pregnant (go figure). Since then, I’ve dedicated my work to providing women with nutritional information and delicious recipes that encourage personal health and nourish their entire family. My organic, whole food, plant-based recipes are created to pack a nutritional punch and promise serious flavor. I’m a believer in one meal for the whole family and love teaching moms how to make age-appropriate adaptations of “grown-up” recipes for kids of all ages.
I live on the central California coast with my husband, our amazing baby boy, and our jealous bulldog. I believe in holistic health and aspire (and hopefully inspire others) to lead a mindful, healthy, balanced, and authentic life. When I’m not in the kitchen cooking and taking pictures of food, you can find me teaching and practicing yoga, hanging with my little fam, riding bikes, going for walks, exploring, reading, listening to good music and inspiring podcasts, camping, hiking, and amusing my boys with “Mama-yoncé” concerts in our living room. 😉
